This project developed in collaboration with Anja Homburg as part of the international live art symposiam Exist-ence 3 (2011). Having never met before, Anja and I registered as strangers to be part of a two-day residency at Metro Arts (Brisbane), where we confined ourselves to room to collaborate for two days. Influenced by the sociology of Erving Goffman, author of The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1971), in which he explains that we all have front-stage and backstage personalities that we adjust to suit different social situations and people, Conversation I documents a two-day “in-process” deconstruction of the first conversation we had together when we first met. [the conversation had been inadvertantly recorded].
